Lunch Club Review August 2024: Bopp & Tone

Submitted on Mon 26 Aug 2024

This month, The Recruitment Company’s Lunch Club ventured into Bopp & Tone, a venue that promised a blend of good food, fine wine, and hopefully, a little less noise than your average lunchtime rush. Expectations were high as we strolled in, and what followed was a feast that left us more stuffed than a Christmas turkey. Here’s the scoop from our top performers.

Simon – 4/5

"Awesome restaurant! We’ve been here a few times over the years, and it's always good fun. The food is great, the wine recommendations are always on point, and the staff are friendly and attentive.

We had a pretty eclectic selection of food to share. As a pescatarian (annoying, I know!), I always dread the classic Sydney steak restaurant, so it was nice to be somewhere with an interesting selection. The octopus was really nice, and the Moreton Bay bug pasta was amazing. Also had the lychee trifle, which I had to begrudgingly share with Anna. It was a small group this month as a few people got hit with a stomach bug (unrelated to the restaurant), but the atmosphere managed to balance lively with still being able to hear yourself talking (a key criterion for us over 50s). Could have done with slightly larger portions on the share plates as we did end up in McDonald’s later in the evening, but it’s an amazing venue and a great place to spend an afternoon."

Simon, our resident pescatarian, breathed a sigh of relief at the variety on offer. The octopus and Moreton Bay bug pasta were the stars of the show, though the portions were so dainty they found themselves in Macca’s later. The trifle was good, even if he had to wrestle it from Anna. All in all, Simon left with a full heart, if not a full stomach.

Anna – 4.49/5

"We recently dined at Bopp & Tone and had a great experience sharing several mains. The octopus was well-cooked, with a nice texture that was just right. The crispy pork belly was a standout—perfectly crispy and delicious. The ricotta gnocchi, while tasty, leaned towards simplicity and didn’t stand out as much as the other dishes. The Moreton Bay bug pasta dish was a bit of a letdown, though. The dish only contained small pieces of the Moreton Bay bug, which were tasty but didn’t match my expectations. For dessert, I had the affogato, which was really nice, though it's a hard dish to get wrong. As an affogato lover, I found it nice but not particularly memorable. We also tried the Dark Chocolate & Peanut Butter Parfait, which was tasty, but the Lychee & Coconut Trifle stole the show for me with its unique and refreshing flavours. During the course of the night, we had a fair amount of wine—enough to make the evening even more enjoyable. But what made this lunch club even more special was the conversations with my colleagues about work and updates on our personal lives."

Anna was impressed with the food but was left pondering the absence of Moreton Bay bug in her pasta. The crispy pork belly hit all the right notes, while the gnocchi played it safe. The trifle was the star of the dessert course, while the wine kept the evening flowing smoothly. In the end, it was the company and conversations that really made the night.

Holly – 4.5/5

"Bopp & Tone was really lovely. It ticked all my lunch club dreams: Great vibe – check. Delicious food – check. Great selection of food – check. Great service – check. On point espresso martini – check! It lost a half point for the roast potatoes being late to the table (we had to chase them up), and they were a little too oily and not as crispy as I assume they are supposed to be. But they were still great. The peanut miso chili cucumbers were a highlight for sure! I’d go back again 😊"

Holly was nearly over the moon with her experience at Bopp & Tone, with only slightly tardy and oily roast potatoes dimming her culinary joy. The vibe was spot-on, the food was delightful, and the espresso martini was just the ticket. The peanut miso chili cucumbers were a revelation, and she’s already planning her next visit.

Bopp & Tone delivered a solid lunch club experience, with some standout dishes and a few minor hiccups along the way. The atmosphere was lively yet comfortable, and the food was creative enough to keep our eclectic palates intrigued. While there were some small disappointments—like needing to chase down roast potatoes and a slightly underwhelming Moreton Bay bug pasta—the overall experience was enjoyable, and the desserts definitely stole the show.

Venue Score: 4.25/5
